Additional Information

The subject of Rossetti’s oil painting is Lilith, Adam’s first wife before Eve in Mesopotamian and Judaic folklore. Rossetti describes her as a ‘witch’ and deceiver in the sonnet her wrote to accompany the artwork, which goes on to say: ‘And her enchanted hair was the first gold, / And still she sits, young, while the earth is old, / And, subtly of herself contemplative, / Draws men to watch the bright web she can weave, / Till heart and body and life are in its hold.’ Using the piece as an allegory of the ‘Beauty of the Body’ in contrast to that of the soul, the artist first painted the piece in 1866–1868 with Fanny Cornforth as model, and later modified the painting in 1872–73 with Alexa Wilding as sitter.

Please note that 80 x 60 cm is the largest size option available for this artwork.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 – 1882) was an English painter, poet, illustrator and translator. In 1848 he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood alongside Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Influenced by literature and medieval revivalism, he would often compose poetry to accompany his paintings, and William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Rossetti found each other a source of mutual inspiration. He was married to fellow artist Elizabeth Eleanor Siddal, who modelled for many of his paintings. Several his works form part of Tate’s collection, including many of his most celebrated paintings.
