Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool 1966 is one of a group of swimming pool paintings that Hockney created. He was fascinated by the subject as unlike in Britain, swimming pools were not considered a luxury in California as they could be used all year round. Peter is Hockney’s friend and muse Peter Schlesinger, and Nick is LA gallery owner Nicholas Wilder. The white bordered square format is thought to be a nod to Polaroid photography, and the bright, flat colours conjure an image of a vibrant Californian lifestyle.
David Hockney, English painter, printmaker, photographer and stage designer, is perhaps the most popular and versatile British artist of the 20th century. Hockney has created some of the most iconic artworks of our time during a career spanning over six decades.
