In this painting, Rae left large areas of the canvas completely blank. The movement of the painting runs from the viewer’s left hand corner downwards, using a variety of abstract and expressionist-like painting techniques – oil paint is applied thickly and smeared with fingertips or loaded brushes, or thinned and spattered and dripped onto the canvas. Rae described her processes as ‘democratic’ as she felt that she enjoyed all painting methods equally.

Fiona Rae RA (born 1963) is a British artist born in Hong Kong, and one of the YBA (Young British Artists) who exhibited in Damien Hirst's 1998 Freeze exhibition. She was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2002, and appointed Professor of Painting at the RA in 2011, making her the first woman to hold the position. She was a Tate Artist Trustee from 2005-2009. Her works are abstract, with titles that often reflect her interest in modern visual media.
