Abstract Painting (726) 1990 is a large scale diptych by Gerhard Richter. The painting is made up of two joined sections of canvas and is easily recognisable by the horizontal smears and scrapes. Richter started with an original image, possibly a photograph, which he then layered thick paint over the top of. The most prominent colours are white, red and rusty orange. The colours have been scraped over the top of each other by Richter with a rubber edged ruler. The multitude of horizontal scrapes gives the impression of a blurred photograph which confirms Richter’s engagement with photographic imagery.

Gerhard Richter is a German painter. Richter began painting enlarged copies of black-and-white photographs using only a range of greys. He became known for relying on actual subject matter when painting, even for his abstract works. In the late 1970s he stopped relying on real-life subjects but it is said that his paintings retained a ‘second hand look’ that made his works look as though he was still painting an actual subject.
