A Married Couple belongs to a series of drawings and watercolour paintings that Grosz worked on during the 1920s up to 1930 entitled Natural History of the German Middle Class. Much of his work during this period focused on critiquing the Weimar era bourgeoisie, which he saw as corrupt, debased and grotesque. He never finished the series as he fled Germany for America in 1933.

Born in Berlin in 1893, George Grosz was a German-American draughtsman and painter. After initially serving in the army during the First World War, he was invalided out of service and withdrew into his art studio, where he began making studies of crippled veterans, prostitutes, drunkards and murderers. During the Weimar era that followed, he produced scathing drawings and paintings of the German bourgeoisie. In 1933 he emigrated to America where he painted landscapes and still lifes, though his work again took a dark and pessimistic turn during the Second World War.
