Additional Information

Poster of Reality Check: The Hudson River School, 2023 by the Guerrilla Girls.

Guerrilla Girls created this infographic poster as part of their contribution to Women Reframe the American Landscape at the Thomas Cole Foundation, the historic home of Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School of landscape painting.

On a green background, an image of a painting by Asher Brown Durand in a gilt frame is placed above a photograph of charcoal kilns on the Chateaugay Railroad by Seneca Ray Stoddard. Text boxes in green and orange overlay the pictures, which read:

It wasn’t a school, it was a club! … of white males who painted the American landscape, hung out together, and sold their work to many of the same collectors.
Female painters like Sarah Cole and Susie Barstow were welcome to tag along with the guys, but couldn’t expect the same recognition. They would have to wait 150 years for shows like Women Reframe the American Landscape.
Successful Black landscape painters like Edward Mitchell Bannister and Robert Duncanson could admire the Hudson River School, but never join the club.
Hudson River School paintings depicted a wilderness tamed by white settlers; when in fact the land had been inhabited, cultivated and protected for millennia by Indigenous Nations…
…who endured genocide, disease and war; only to be relocated elsewhere by broken treaties, unscrupulous land speculators, and acts of Congress.
While HRS painters romanticized and idealised the stolen land, robber barons extracted whatever they could, and left a mess for future generations.
These same tycoons bought Hudson River School paintings, donated them to museums, and promoted an Eden that never was.

The poster measures 64 x 40 cm, in full bleed print, without any border. It’s part of Guerrilla Girls Tate Edit takeover, a celebration of art and activism curated by the masked artists themselves. Formed in New York City in 1985, Guerrilla Girls strive to ‘fight discrimination through humour, activism, and the arts’, highlighting sexism, racism and elitism in the art world. They conceal their identities, often with gorilla masks, and use pseudonyms. They continue to produce publicity exposing discrimination, as well as conducting seminars and workshops in schools, colleges and art institutions.
