Additional Information

Reproduction poster of When Racism And Sexism Are No Longer Fashionable, How Much Will Your Art Collection Be Worth?, 1989, by Guerrilla Girls.

Originally created as a screeprinted poster that could be used for fly-posting, this piece was also included in the portfolio collection Guerrilla Girls Talk Back. In black text on a white background, the poster reads:

WHEN RACISM AND SEXISM ARE NO LONGER FASHIONABLE, HOW MUCH WILL YOUR ART COLLECTION BE WORTH?
The art market won’t bestow mega-buck prices on the work of a few white males forever. For the 17.7 million you just spent on a single Jasper Johns painting, you could have bought at least one work by all of these women and artists of color.
Bernice Abbott, Anni Albers, Sofonisba Anguisolla, Diane Arbus, Vanessa Bell, Isabel Bishop, Rosa Bonheur, Elizabeth Bourgereau, Margaret Bourke-White, Romaine Brooks, Julia Margaret Cameron, Emily Carr, Rosalba Carriera, Mary Cassatt, Constance Marie Charpentier, Imogen Cunningham, Sonia Delaunay, Elaine de Kooning, Lavinia Fontana, Meta Warwick Fuller, Artemisia Gentileschi, Marguérite Gérard, Natalia Goncharova, Kate Greenaway, Barbara Hepworth, Eva Hesse, Hannah Hoch, Anna Huntington, May Howard Jackson, Frida Kahlo, Angelica Kauffmann, Hilma af Klimt, Kathe Kollwitz, Lee Krasner, Dorothea Lange, Marie Laurencin, Edmonia Lewis, Judith Lester, Barbara Longhi, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, Lisette Model, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Tina Modotti, Berthe Morisot, Grandma Moses, Gabriele Münter, Alice Neel, Louise Nevelson, Georgia O'Keeffe, Sarah Peale, Ljubova Popova, Olga Rosanova, Nellie Mae Rowe, Rachel Ruysch, Kay Sage, Augusta Savage, Vavara Stepanova, Florine Stettheimer, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Alma Thomas, Marietta Robusti Tintoretto, Suzanne Valadon, Remedios Varo, Elizabeth Vigée Le Brun, Laura Wheeling Waring, Meret Oppenheim
A Public Service Message from Guerrilla Girls Conscience of the Art World.

The poster measures 45 x 60 cm, making it a close match for the original artwork, which was 43.5 x 55.5 cm.

The poster is part of our Guerrilla Girls Tate Edit takeover, a celebration of art and activism curated by the masked artists themselves. Formed in New York City in 1985, Guerrilla Girls strive to ‘fight discrimination through humour, activism, and the arts’, highlighting sexism, racism and elitism in the art world. They conceal their identities, often with gorilla masks, and use pseudonyms. They continue to produce publicity exposing discrimination, as well as conducting seminars and workshops in schools, colleges and art institutions.
