Joan Jonas

Joan Jonas generously produced the limited edition, Score, Document of 2012 reconstruction of Mirror Piece I (1969), 2018, on the occasion of the Tate Modern exhibition, Joan Jonas, 14 March 2018 – 5 August 2018, in support of Tate. An edition of 60, ach work is signed and numbered by the artist.

Score, Document of 2012 reconstruction of Mirror Piece I (1969), 2018 is a diagrammatic representation of the performance, Mirror Piece. The performance featured performers carrying oblong mirrors in slowly choreographed movements before the audience, alternately reflecting their own bodies and the surroundings, and offering the audience a flattened view of itself as an image within the performance.

Joan Jonas (b. 1936, New York, USA) is a pioneer of performance and video art and a hero to a generation of younger artists. She is one of the most important female artists to emerge in the late 1960s and early 1970s and has pushed the boundaries of art for the last five decades. Jonas’ projects and experiments provided the foundation on which much video performance art would be based. Her influences also extended to visual art, conceptual art, theatre, performance art and other visual media.

Jonas’ work can be found in a number of public institutions, including Tate Modern, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and MOMA.
