About the artwork
In 1940, Moore was became an Official War Artist and began sketching people on the London Underground and in shelters. This drawing shows a woman sitting apart from the others. She anxiously clasps her hands; this nervousness is emphasised by nervous scratchy lines of the figure and the contrast between the foreground and the background.

About the artist
Renowned British artist Henry Moore was born in July 1898 in Castleford, Yorkshire. His most prominent work was his distinctive sculptures in stone, wood and bronze, but he was also an accomplished draughtsman. Moore took inspiration from the human figure, which he depicted in a distinct style. This style drew upon diverse cultural and artistic influences and echoed the English landscape tradition.
