De Wint's paintings were often based on stretches of open or wooded country in Lincolnshire and this is no exception. The realistic painting depicts a horse and cart, and men working the farm land, with a cloudy sky above.

Peter De Wint was born in Stoke-on-Trent, the son of a physician of Dutch ancestry from New York. He moved to London in 1802, and was apprenticed to an engraver and portrait painter. He later bought his freedom, on condition that he supply eighteen oil paintings. By 1910, as an established drawing-master, De Wint was spending his summers teaching well-to-do families. Many of his panoramic landscapes and haymaking scenes are set in Lincolnshire. He also occasionally toured in Wales, and travelled to Normandy.
