When he wasn’t painting the views from his Kew apartment, Pissarro spent much of his time in Kew Gardens, painting eleven canvasses there. The rhododendron dell was one of the main attractions, and Pissarro was able to capture the abundancy of the site, depicting the wanderers in the centre of the painting dwarfed by the bright foliage of the trees and flowers.

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a Danish-French Impressionist painter, and later mentor of Cézanne and Gauguin. He moved to London briefly during the Franco- Prussian war, and returned to visit several times in the 1890s. A pivotal figure in the Impressionist movement, Pissarro was the only artist to have shown his work at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions, from 1874 to 1886.
