From the late 1940s Scott began to flatten the forms in his paintings. Instead of painting from actual scenes, he painted from memory. But he kept some of the articles he used around him in his studio. These included frying pans, sauce pans, cups and jugs. Winter Still Life is painted from a memory of some of these articles on a stove. The little detail in the piece is in the cookware that Scott would have been surrounded by.

          Artist details

Born 1913 to Scottish-Irish parents, William Scott is the most internationally celebrated 20th century painter from Ulster, Northern Ireland. Scott is best known for his abstract and still-life paintings of simple kitchen objects. He strayed from these forms several times throughout his life but with little success. While serving in the army he made a number of watercolours of soldiers and the landscape, but when the war ended he returned to painting still lifes in ernest.
