This t-shirt has been made exclusively for The Radical Eye exhibition at Tate Modern, in which this artwork appears.
Known as ‘Umbo’, German-born Otto Umbehr was a successful photographer commercially. He established a portrait photography studio in Berlin in 1926 and his work was subsequently published widely in newspapers and magazines. He also experimented with many non-traditional techniques in his own work. This is evident in Katz, 1927, where the long exposure has caused a blurred effect, creating a sense of movement within the image.
The Radical Eye exhibition at Tate Modern displays Sir Elton John’s private photography collection. These rare photographic prints are taken from the classic Modernist period of the 1920s through to the 1950s and include such famous artists as Alexandr Rodchenko and Man Ray.
