Here, in an oil sketch made for a larger work, they brush the surface of a geometric window, which is suggestive of New York, the artist’s home. Katz has been painting the American cityscape and landscape since the 1950s, moving between New York and a summer house in Maine.

He has continued to work into his 90s, and is one of America’s most celebrated artists.
