Katz is famous for his depictions of the American landscape, and this work comes from a series he made in the late 1990s of the Maine coastline. Katz would paint this scene in situ at sunrise and sunset throughout the summer.

Alex Katz (born 1927) is an American artist best known for his large-scale paintings, sculptures and prints. His stylised paintings are a modern take on the classical themes of portraiture and landscapes, using flat colour and an economy of line. He has continued to work into his 90s, and is one of America’s most celebrated artists.
