Katz usually makes small scale oil paintings of his subjects from life, and often later uses these as studies for a large scale painting. His figurative pieces, portraits of family and friends, have been a staple of his work since the 1950s, and are now seen as precursors of Pop Art. The quick, visible brushstrokes and loose sketching are in contrast to the clean lines and flatness of colour characteristic of Katz’s large scale works.

Alex Katz (born 1927) is an American artist best known for his large-scale paintings, sculptures and prints. His stylised paintings are a modern take on the classical themes of portraiture and landscapes, using flat colour and an economy of line. He has continued to work into his 90s, and is one of America’s most celebrated artists.
