Additional Information

Poster advertising Tate’s Beatrix Potter exhibition, featuring Potter’s illustration Lady Mouse in Mob Cap, c.1092, originally used in her famous story The Tailor of Gloucester. Just before the close of the exhibition, on January 14 1988, The Times quoted Tate’s spokesman, Michael Fraser, as saying ‘The exhibition has been extremely well attended, far more than anticipated’, noting that daily visitor figures were between 800-1,700. He described Potter as ‘an acute observer of natural history [who] produced very fine illustrations of animal and insect subjects, as well as archaeological artefacts and landscapes.’

The text on the poster reads:

Helen Beatrix Potter (1866 –1943) was a British writer, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist. Potter's study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology, but she is best known for the successful series of children's books the wrote and illustrated, including The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tailor of Gloucester and The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin. 22 of her illustrations for The Tailor of Gloucester form part of Tate’s collection, and can be viewed by appointment in Tate Britain’s Prints and Drawings Room.
