Claudette Johnson used pastel on a huge sheet of paper for this large-scale portrait, sat for by the artist Beverly Bennett. Using only two colours, raw umber and black, Johnson draws Bennett twisting to look defiantly out at the viewer. To create the piece, Johnson draws with the oversized paper hung on the wall rather than an easel. This means that she too must turn to look at her sitter behind her, which she says ‘helps to keep an element of struggle in the drawings.’

Claudette Elaine Johnson MBE (born 1959) is a British visual artist, best known for her large-scale figurative drawings of Black women. Born in Manchester, she later studied Fine Art at Wolverhampton Polytechnic. A founder member of the BLK Art Group, her appearance at the First National Black Arts Conference in 1982 has been described as a formative moment in the Black feminist art movement in the UK. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to art, and her work is held in collections across the UK, including at Tate.
