Additional Information

Léger painted many works featuring contemporary Adam and Eve figures, giving them modern touches such as tattoos and athletic clothing. In those pictures, the couple are identifiable as the title characters by an apple tattoo, and a serpent coiled around the staff in Adam’s hand. In this version, however, there is no snake and no apple – the figures are much more universal, and their meaning more obscure.
