Additional Information

Some of Frank Bowling’s works contain social elements, with friends and visitors invited to help mix and pour paint, and incorporating gifts, souvenirs and incidental details into the paintings themselves. This one such example, and the middle stripe of coloured blocks is part of a work given to Bowling by an artist friend, Arlington Weithers. With Weithers’ permission, Bowling cut the works up and used elements in two of his own paintings. The top and bottom sections of Bowling’s painting here have been sewn onto Weithers’ printed stripes, with the gap between the sections forming the horizontal coloured-block band across the piece.

Frank Bowling (born 1934) moved to Britain in his late teens from Guyana, and studied painting at the Royal College of Art alongside David Hockney, R.B. Kitaj and Derek Boshier, graduating in 1962 with the Silver Medal in painting. Bowling’s work combines figuration, abstract elements, contemporary and autobiographical references with intense experimentation and exploration of the possibilities of paint. He was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2005, and awarded an OBE in 2008. He continues to work in his studios in New York and London.
