Additional Information

Mirror, 1964-6 is one of Frank Bowling’s early masterpieces. The artist has explained the piece as capturing his experience as an artist at that particular moment in time. The spiral staircase is from the Royal College of Art, where Bowling studied, and in the painting it ‘serves as an entry to another culture’. Surrounded by aspects of contemporary design and fashionable Op Art, Bowling depicted his then wife in between two figures that represent himself. The top figure Bowling has described as an ‘entity split off from myself, who is always on the verge of pulling the whole edifice down.’

Kitaj and Derek Boshier, graduating in 1962 with the Silver Medal in painting. Bowling’s work combines figuration, abstract elements, contemporary and autobiographical references with intense experimentation and exploration of the possibilities of paint. He was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2005, and awarded an OBE in 2008. He continues to work in his studios in New York and London.
