Télémaque titled this semi-abstract oil on canvas painting Eclaireur, which can be translated as ‘the guide’. Fluent in three languages, the artist has expressed his interest in language and its relationship to art. With this in mind, the title’s relationship to the content of the artwork becomes a device as thought-provoking as the creature-like elements that feature in the piece.

Hervé Télémaque (born November 5, 1937), is a French painter of Haitian origin. Télémaque left Haiti to study in New York, and then went on to Paris, where he has lived and worked since 1961. His work is predominantly associated with the surrealism and the narrative figuration movements, featuring abstract, cartoon-like imagery, and mixed media compositions.
