This photograph by Iwao Yamawaki brilliantly captures the essence of Bauhaus principles of photography. Everyday objects – two eggs and some string – are captured in light and shadow, elevating their beauty without additional embellishment. Developed as a gelatin silver print on paper, it fulfils László Moholy-Nagy’s idea that photography could open up new ways of seeing the world beyond those available to the human eye, with the string’s shadows sharply silhouetted.

Iwao Yamawaki (1898 –1987) was a Japanese photographer and architect. Born Iwao Fujita in Nagasaki, Yamawaki studied architecture at the Tokyo School of Arts and after graduating worked as an architect for a construction company. He used photography as a support for his architectural studies, and in 1931 travelled to Germany and studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau. He became heavily influenced by László Moholy-Nagy’s idea that photography could open up new ways of seeing the world beyond those available to the human eye. Yamawaki travelled widely in Europe and the Soviet Union, documenting modernist architecture and design, as well as capturing student life at the Bauhaus.
