The result of careful, systematic planning and execution, Jean Spencer’s bold colourwork exploration makes a punchy impact on this 100% organic cotton hoodie, available in a choice of four colours. Spencer’s aim was to observe the impact colours have on one another – choose carefully from navy, grey, white or black, and from see what effect your choice of colour has.
Each of the horizontal bands or blocks of colour is a different size and colour, with stripes of different hue, tone and intensity put next to each other. Spencer applied the paint using a brush in an extremely precise manner, without any overlap between the bands of colour.

About the artist
Jean Spencer (1942 – 1998) was a British artist known for her abstract paintings and relief sculptures. She studied teacher training at Bath Academy of Art, and started to make Constructivist style work. Co-founding the Systems Group with her husband and fellow-artist Malcolm Hughes, systematic and mathematical processes were core to her work for many years, as well as her research into the properties and relations of colour. Her last series of works, six colour blocked panels, is part of Tate’s collection.
About our manufacturer
We’ve partnered with Teemill for our collection of print-on-demand apparel featuring a choice of Tate artwork designs. A sustainable, forward-thinking company, their garments are made in a wind-and-solar powered, SA8000 Certified factory in India dedicated to the fair treatment of workers, using organic sustainably produced cotton. They’re printed using low-waste digital printing tech and vegan inks that conform to the GOTS/Soil Association organic criteria and are never tested on animals. The garments are printed with your chosen design on demand in Teemill’s Isle of Wight factory, so there’s no overstock and no waste, and they’re shipped to you in plastic-free, recyclable packaging (which is also great for colouring-in).
If looked after well, your t-shirt should last for years, and at the end of its life you can use the QR code on the label to send it back to Teemill, where it’ll be turned back into usable material and made into new t-shirts.
