This piece is part of Himid’s body of work exploring the extraordinary moments of everyday life that are rarely seen in art - depicting intimate interactions and moments of indecision between men. In this piece, one man wears a white mask, and talks to another, who seems to be studiously avoiding his gaze. The language of clothes is of interest to Himid, as she writes: ‘Who is communicating with whom? Look at what they are wearing / What is the conversation? Read the colour and the pattern’.

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
