Additional Information

Marlow Moss made this piece in 1935, making it one of the earliest works the artist made with string and canvas. Strikingly geometrical, all of the angles are right angles, and every line is parallel with the edges of the base canvas, and with each other. On a white canvas ground, overlaid with a heavily textured T shaped canvas piece, metallic string is used to divide the piece into rectangles and squares. Mathematically precise, Marlow Moss compared the linework of these pieces to music, aiming for ‘beauty of form’ through lines in place of notes.

Marlow Moss (1889 – 1958) was a British painter and sculptor, best known for Constructivist works. Born in London, Marlow Moss studied at St John's Wood School of Art, the Slade School of Fine Art and the Penzance School of Art. Marlow Moss’s partner, the writer Netty Nijhoff, introduced the artist to Piet Modrian, resulting in a mutual influence on each other’s work. Before WWII, Marlow Moss worked mostly in painting, and after in sculpture. Much of Marlow Moss’s work was lost during the war when the artist's studio was bombed, but several pieces are held in Tate’s collection.
