Dyce’s painting was the product of a trip he made in the autumn of 1858 to the popular holiday resort of Pegwell Bay beach near Ramsgate, Kent. It shows various members of his family gathering shells on a backdrop of chalky cliffs.

Scottish-born painter William Dyce completed his education with visits to Italy in 1825 and 1827–30, where he studied the old masters, particularly Raphael. However, in the 1830s, working in Edinburgh, most of his work was conventional portraiture. Dyce, who shared many of the principles of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, secured Ruskin's interest on their behalf in 1851.
