In this oil sketch, Katz invites us to look upwards at a blue sky of thick, almost woven, brushstrokes through a canopy of black, leafless branches. The black lines and frenetic dots of the branches has been suggested as the influence of Katz’s fellow of American artist Jackson Pollock. These small oil sketches are full of energy, as Katz says, "A sketch is very direct. It is working empirically, inside of an idea."

Alex Katz (born 1927) is an American artist best known for his large-scale paintings, sculptures and prints. His stylised paintings are a modern take on the classical themes of portraiture and landscapes, using flat colour and an economy of line. He has continued to work into his 90s, and is one of America’s most celebrated artists.
