, the white petals striking against the broad brushstrokes of green. Katz has said that he painted flowers as a reaction to the ‘macho’ atmosphere of abstract expressionism, but enjoyed the energy of expressionism – the quick, loose brushstrokes of the petals here give the painting a feeling of immediacy.

Alex Katz (born 1927) is an American artist best known for his large-scale paintings, sculptures and prints. His stylised paintings are a modern take on the classical themes of portraiture and landscapes, using flat colour and an economy of line. He has continued to work into his 90s, and is one of America’s most celebrated artists.
