In the mid-1990s, Katz created several paintings of winter branches. The way they gently stretch from corner to corner across the piece has been likened to the movement of Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, of which Katz was an admirer. Small oil paintings such as this one are sketched from life and often made as studies to be scaled up into larger works.
