Additional Information
Corbin Shaw’s poster details an image of the golden yellow and black shorts, front and back, against a white background. The word ‘Imperfect’ is on an embroidered label at the waistband, and ‘You’ll be golden’ is embroidered in italic writing on the front, with a Love embroidered patch at the hem. The back is embroidered with a bold red ‘DARLING’ in capital letters across the rear.
An inspiring message of compassion we can all get behind, Shaw explained his concept as a design for his younger self. Having boxed as a teenager, he remembered other boys with custom shorts with threatening words like ‘destroyer’ or ‘champion’ embroidered on them as a warning to their opponents. Subverting this idea, he says ‘With my shorts I wanted to use words that if you saw them at a glance in the ring you might think they said something else for example the label reads “imperfect” as opposed to “I’m perfect” or “Darling” could be “Daring”. I liked how these words were honest or endearing… In my work I'm always looking to disarm or humanise the hyper masculine loaded object. Bring it down to earth. So these shorts are a message to my younger self “you’ll be golden” don’t worry, you're doing fine; You don't have to be so strong.’
The official Team GB logo is printed at the bottom of the poster, along with the artist’s name and the location of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The poster is printed on Premium 50gsm Coala paper and measures 80 x 60 cm, an impactful commemorative piece that’ll resonate long after the 2024 Games have passed.
The Team GB lion's head logo and Team GB wordmark are registered trademarks of the British Olympic Association © 2024.
About the artist
Corbin Shaw (born 1998) is a British artist from Sheffield who now lives and works in East London, whose textile-based work explores the complex realm of masculinity and identity, and pays homage to the people and places that have shaped his northern identity, such as pubs, football grounds and boxing gyms. His art seeks to break down stigmas and stereotypes through his re-imagination of masculine 'icons' and objects, such as football banners, clothing, slogans and newspapers.
