Horse is a lithograph with the urgent, drafted feel of a sketch. The horse seems to fight against a rider that is almost ghostly in their barely-there partial sketching. Horses and riders were a recurrent theme in Frink’s work; a capable horsewoman herself, she made a series of studies and sculptures of male figures on horseback, exploring the dual anatomy and the relationship between the rider and the horse. Horse is part of Images 67, a collection of nine lithographs of animals by Frink named after the year of their creation.

Dame Elisabeth Frink was an English sculptor and printmaker who studied at the Guildford School of Art at the Chelsea School of Art. Frink’s range of subjects included the human figure, birds, dogs, horses and religious motifs. Frink created a lot of bronze outdoor sculptures, her style generalised the form and eliminated the detail of the sculptures. Frink’s continued fascination with flight was evident in a series of falling figures and winged men that she made during the 1960s.
