Léger painted this piece at the age of 73, one year before his death. It is a still-life arrangement using his signature combination of thickly-outlined shapes paired with blocks of primary colours. Léger attributed his use of colour in this way to the influence of living in America and seeing neon signs light up and change the colours of everything around them.

French painter and designer Fernand Léger, was born in Agentan, Normandy in 1881. His work encompasses cubist and semi-abstract styles, and in his later years he also worked in design for the stage. Léger also became an active advocate for peace, and in 1948 became a founder-member of the National Council of the World Peace Movement.
