Additional Information
Coffee by Tate is a vibrant community-led non-profit business that helps fund Tate Gallery and champion coffee producers and professionals of all genders throughout the coffee value chain. Our range of coffees is comprised of individual, community and family producers and designed to reflect the seasonality, diversity and quality of coffee grown across Africa and Latin America. Our range of Espresso and Filter coffees are the results of projects, relationships or initiatives that we have instigated or supported in producing communities, with the help of our partners, and changes seasonally. This is a more sustainable process that ensures the highest quality yield and allows us to work with more producers.
Our current Gallery Filter coffee is Kigeri, a natural process coffee from Burundi. This coffee is hitting all the right summer notes, think strawberries and cream with an incredible citrus top note.
Flavour notes: Campinos, Tamarind, Black Tea
Producers: Kigeri, Izuba Washing Station
Location: Runinya, Kayanza Province, Burundi
Process: Natural
Variety: Red Bourbon
Size: 250 g
Keep your coffee sealed in the bag and store in a cool dry place away from sunlight. Use within 3 months.
About our producers
Izuba meaning “sun” in Kirundi, is located in Runinya, a Kabarore Commune of Kayanza Province situated near to the Kibira national park, where the soil and climate are paired well for fantastic coffee production. The station is managed by Ntama Appolinaire, who works alongside Prosper Merrimee, the operational manager of Raw Material Burundi. Izuba employs 2 full-time staff and around 250 seasonal workers, who are all local to the station.
Izuba mostly produces washed coffees but is actively developing both honey and natural processed lots, which will become larger in volume over time. Once the coffee has been fully processed, any remaining coffee pulp is turned into a natural fertiliser as it degrades. When ready, it is distributed to local farmers to add nutrients to their soil. Kigeri, Ryamukona, and Mugoyi are the three hills (collines) surrounding Izuba and the three areas in which coffee is collected or delivered from. Each volume of cherry sold to Izuba is recorded by producer and hillside, showing the minute variances in profile from locations surrounding the washing station.
