Kara Walker

Kara Walker has generously produced Theme for the Fons Americanus, 2021, a limited edition print on the occasion of the Hyundai Commission, Fons Americanus, at Tate Modern, 2 October 2019 – 7 February 2021.

Walker’s edition is a study for her Fons Americanus, a 13-metre tall site-specific fountain and sculpture created for the Turbine Hall in Tate Modern and inspired by the Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace, London. Rather than a celebration of the British Empire, Fons Americanus subverts the usual function of a memorial to question narratives of power and explore the interconnected histories of Africa, America and Europe. Utilising water as a central motif, Walker links the legacies of imperialism and white supremacy to the legacies of individual lives, fates, and tragedies. Bringing together fact, fiction and memory, Fons Americanus stands as a representation of this narrative, a new mythology of the Black Atlantic. This edition offers a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s process.

Theme for the Fons Americanus, 2021, is an archival digital pigment print edition, each signed and numbered by the artist and comes unframed.

Based in New York, Kara Walker (b. 1969, Stockton, California) works in a variety of mediums, including painting, print-making and installation. She is best known for her candid investigation of race, gender, sexuality, and violence through silhouetted figures that have appeared in numerous exhibitions worldwide.

Walker is the recipient of many awards, notably the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award in 1997 and the United States Artists, Eileen Harris Norton Fellowship in 2008. In 2012, Walker became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Recent solo exhibitions and projects have been presented at; Kunstmuseum Basel, Basel, Switzerland (2021); New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT (2020); Sikkema Jenkins & CO., New York , Sprüth Magers, Berlin, Germany (2020) and The Broad, Los Angeles, CA (2020). Her work can be found in many museums and public collections including The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN; Tate Gallery, London; the Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo (MAXXI), Rome; and Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt.
