Himid’s Metal Handkerchief series of acrylic on metal paintings are inspired by both the patterns of East African Kanga and by British health and safety manuals used in industry. The pieces each feature a tool or piece of machinery, with a sentence lifted from a user manual. Out of their original context, they become instructions for life. Saw/Flag instructs us to ‘Allow for short breaks’.

Lubaina Himid was born in 1954 in Zanzibar, Tanzania but moved to England shortly after her birth. A Turner-prize winning artists, her paintings, prints, drawings and installations celebrate Black creativity and the people of the African diaspora whilst challenging institutional invisibility. The year after she won the Turner prize, she was made a CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to art. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire.
