This painting is part of Louis’ Unfurled series of paintings, a collection of 150 works using Color Field painting techniques. Influenced by Helen Frankenthaler’s ‘poured stain’ technique, Louis created his ‘one shot’ method of pouring thinned paint onto unprimed canvas, using wooden stays to influence the flow, direction and absorption of the paint to create minimalistic patterns.

Morris Louis (1912 – 1962) was an American painter specialising in Colour Field painting. This approach was a challenge to the idea of what constitutes a ‘finished’ painting. Eschewing paintbrushes in favour of pouring thinned paint directly onto a raw canvas, and using simple, repetitive patterns in his work made Louis a prominent artist in the Post-Painterly Abstraction exhibition in 1964.
