picasso Estampes Galerie de la Colombe 1959 rare vintage poster

Produced to promote an exhibition of Picasso’s linocut and lithograph prints at the Galerie de la Colombe in Vallauris, this poster represents a rare opportunity to purchase an original1959 print produced in close collaboration with the artist himself.

Lithograph printed on thick archival paper by Hidalgo Arnéra, the master printmaker who tutored Picasso in the art of linocut printing, the poster features an image of one of Picasso’s printed artworks. In simple black lines with the fluidity of a sketch in ink, two classical female nudes are depicted in front of a window, one reclining on a couch, the other seated in a contemplative pose.

The text on the poster reads:

Whilst other examples of this poster are in existence, this piece is distinguished by its 66.5 x 51 cm medium weight paper, and the distinctive lowercase ‘p’ beginning the artist’s name, contributing to the charm of the original mid-century print. Whether an earlier design or a variation, the poster is an elegantly designed and produced collectors’ piece.

The studio’s mark of authenticity, ‘Imprimerie Arnéra - Vallauris’, is printed in black at the bottom edge of the poster.

When Hidalgo Arnéra passed away in 2007, art dealer, philanthropist and regular visitor to the Imprimerie Arnéra studio Fred Mulder was approached by his heirs to purchase their archive. It is from this collection that we have selected this rare Picasso exhibition poster, now a piece of art history itself.

The poster has been carefully kept in excellent conditions for over 66 years, however due to the paper type used and its advanced age, please be aware that some signs of age are to be expected on the paper. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, only one of these posters is available from Tate Shop.
