Orange, Black and White Composition
was painted during a period where many of Nicholson’s works had become completely abstract. This phase came to a gradual end after a visit to the USA where he met Pollock, Rothko and Kline. Following this he began to drift back to a more representational style.

Born 1913 to Scottish-Irish parents, William Scott is the most internationally celebrated 20th century painter from Ulster, Northern Ireland. Scott is best known for his abstract and still-life paintings of simple kitchen objects. He strayed from these forms several times throughout his life but with little success. While serving in the army he made a number of watercolours of soldiers and the landscape, but when the war ended he returned to painting still lifes in ernest.
