The Snail shoulder bag

Inspired by Matisse’s cut out artwork, this HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE for Tate pleated crossbody bag features an image of the artwork, an adjustable shoulder strap and a two-button fastening.

The bag’s distinctive pleats are created via an ISSEY MIYAKE original technology in which fabrics are first cut and sewn into basic forms and then pleated. This integrates the pleating process into the design and making of the garment, as opposed to conventional methods that cut and sew pre-pleated fabrics. This echoes the methods Matisse used to create his artworks made from cut out pieces of painted paper, which he described as ‘Instead of drawing the outline and putting the colour inside it ... I draw straight into the colour.’

Derived from Henri Matisse’s The Snail, this capsule collection captures the vibrancy and movement found in the coloured paper cut-outs. While faithfully representing the colour palette, the collection translates the artwork into clothing with a lively, animated expression. The collection is exclusively available at Tate Shop.

To care for your bag, please machine wash cold, on a gentle cycle. Use only non-chlorine bleach, if needed. Dry immediately by line drying in the shade, and do not tumble dry. Do not iron or dryclean.
