Description
This gift book celebrates the highs and lows of the winter season through art drawn from Tate’s collection. Divided into key themes – ‘Seasonal Views & Landscapes’, ‘Religious Imagery’, ‘Celebration & Festivity’ and ‘Friends & Family/Journeying’ – each of the works of art included has been individually selected for the particular way in which the artist has attempted to capture this special time of year.

Sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often beautiful and occasionally telling, placed together these beautiful images create a fascinating and enlightening journey through the visual portrayal of winter and the holiday season in Western art. The collection spans several centuries and features a variety of artists from J.M.W. Turner and John Everett Millais to Barbara Hepworth, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Grayson Perry and Peter Doig.

Kirsteen McSwein is Assistant Curator for Interpretation at Tate Britain and is author of Tate Britain: Highlights.
