The yellow house here is Katz’s Lincolnsville summer house in Maine. Although Katz is well known for his large-scale works, he usually begins each piece with a small oil painting from life, which is then used as a study for the larger work. These small oil sketches are full of energy, as Katz says, "A sketch is very direct. It is working empirically, inside of an idea."
