Additional Information

Exhibition art print of Auguste Rodin’s Meditation, 1896. The photograph used for the print was taken by French photographer Emmanuel Berry for his book on Rodin, exploring the expressive power of the sculptor through black and white photographs.

La Méditation was created by Rodin first as part of a piece inspired by Michelangelo’s depiction of The Gates of Hell, and was then reworked into his Monument to Victor Hugo, representing one of the poet’s muses. For the monument, the arms and part of the legs of the statue needed to be removed, an arrangement Rodin was happy with, as he kept the sculpture in this state when exhibiting it alone.

Our art prints are 40 x 30 cm including an artwork credit line and white border, printed on responsibly sourced paper by our Sussex-based printers.

About the artist

Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was a French sculptor, draughtsman and engraver. After failing to obtain entry to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he worked for some years as an ornamental mason and continued his own work in the evenings. He had his first one-man exhibition with Monet in 1889, but full recognition only came after he organised a large exhibition of his works during the Paris International Exhibition of 1900. He is largely considered to be one of the founders of modern sculpture. Tate holds several of his works in the collection, including The Kiss, 1901–4.
