Additional Information
With its lightly fitted shape, this Breton striped long-sleeved t-shirt has a unisex appeal, and is made from 100% lightweight cotton jersey.
The Breton t-shirt became part of the official wardrobe of the French Navy in 1858, with specific stipulations for the stripes: 21 white stripes measuring 20mm and 20 or 21 blue stripes measuring 10mm. These stripes were thought to make sailors easier to spot if they fell overboard, and so other seafarers also adopted the Breton stripes as part of their workwear. Later in the 20th century, fashion leaders such as Coco Chanel brought Breton into mainstream fashion, and it has been associated with iconic fashion, art and film figures ever since.
Saint James began dying and weaving wool in 1850, carrying on a thousand-year textile tradition in the town that the brand takes its name from. As the authentic purveyors of Breton marinière striped goods, they continue this long tradition by still making each piece in Saint-James, Normandy, France.
