Cornelia Parker

In 2017, Cornelia Parker became the first woman to hold the title of Official Election Artist, commissioned by the Speaker’s Advisory Committee on Works of Art. This image is a still from one of her pieces created for that post – a video taken by drone inside the main chamber in the Houses of Parliament. Parker strewed newspapers from the whole year around the chamber, and invited director Harry Dwyer to fly the drone around the space, capturing previously unseen parts and angles, and also using the drone’s force itself, its propellers scattering the newspapers and acting as a visible intruder on the space. Dwyer described the experience as feeling like ‘treading a tightrope between making a carefully crafted film and things descending into chaos.’

Cornelia Parker (b. 1956, Cheshire, UK) is a visual artist considered one of the UK's most acclaimed contemporary artists. Best known for her large-scale installations and sculpture, Parker also works across a variety of other mediums, including drawing, photography and embroidery. Always driven by curiosity, she reconfigures domestic objects to question our relationship with the world. Using transformation, playfulness and storytelling, she engages with important issues of our time, be it violence, ecology or human rights. In 2010 she was made an OBE and elected to the Royal Academy of Arts, and her work has been exhibited globally is and held in collections all over the world, including Tate’s.
