Framed rare Picasso et le Théâtre Toulouse vintage poster

A rare vintage original Picasso lithograph exhibition poster from 1965, presented in an oak frame made from sustainably sourced wood.

The poster was designed by Picasso himself to promote the Picasso et le Théâtre exhibition at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse. The exhibition ran from 22 June to 15 September 1965, and like our own Theatre Picasso exhibition at Tate Modern, explored Picasso’s work with and relationship to theatre and performance, including studies, costumes, curtains, sketches, paintings and prints.

Here Picasso used his linocut print of an actor in brown and black as the poster image, writing the exhibition details (Picasso et le Théâtre, Toulouse, Musée des Augustins, Juin-Septembre 1965) in by hand in brown to finish the design.

The poster was printed in Vallauris, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in Southeastern France by Imprimerie Arnéra, the print studio of Italian Master printmaker Hidalgo Arnéra, who taught Picasso linocut techniques. The resulting artworks often formed the basis for the posters Picasso designed to advertise his exhibitions, and were lithograph printed at Imprimerie Arnéra. ‘Imp. Arnéra Vallauris’ is printed in the bottom corner of the poster, the studio’s mark of authenticity.

Few of these posters remain available, but the lithographs presented here are in excellent condition, and framed in hand-assembled oak frames, glazed with UV resistant acrylic to ensure that they remain so for many more years to come.

Please note that although the poster is in excellent condition, as it was produced 60 years ago, it may show some signs of age, highlighting its status as a collectible piece of art history.
