Hew Locke The Bugler silk scarf

A stunning cream and black large silk scarf, featuring The Bugler, 2025, a design by the artist Hew Locke, created especially for Tate Shop.

Locke’s design is based on a detail from one of his iconic bead-and-cord wall artworks, one of which, Vita, Veritas, Victoria, 2007, is on display in Tate Britain. A large, 90 x 90 cm square of pure silk with hand-rolled edges acts as the canvas for the artist’s intricate black lined design. It's presented in a slim black box, perfect for gifting.

At the centre of the design stands Locke’s eponymous bugler. His call is answered by ghosts from forgotten wars, who form a canopy like the branches of a tree above the bugle player. Monkeys, whose closeness to humans has always fascinated Locke, have also answered the call, and gather at the bugler’s feet, the roots to his tree trunk-like stance.

Hew Locke (b. 1959) is an Edinburgh-born sculptor and contemporary visual artist based in Brixton, London. Locke’s artwork explores the languages of colonial and post-colonial power, how different cultures fashion their identities through visual symbols of authority, and how these representations are altered by the passage of time. His work is held in many collections across the UK and US, including the Tate collection, and he was the Duveen Hall commission artist at Tate Britain for 2022.
