Additional Information

About the artwork
Bequeathed to Tate by Dorothy Barnard in 1949, this sketch of her was done by John Singer Sargent in preparation for his garden scene, Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, 1885–6. Known as Dolly, she was eleven years old at the time Sargent painted the piece. Painting from life, Sargent needed to work on the artwork a little each evening during the window of time that the conditions were perfect in the garden. This sketch is one of two that he used to record the girls’ poses, so that he could recreate them each evening.

Please note that this artwork is only available in size Small.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

American painter John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was considered the most fashionable portrait painter working in England and the USA in the late 19th century. During his early career in 1880s he was influenced by his friend Monet towards Impressionism, but by the 1890s had success with society portraits. After 1900 Sargent spent his summers on long sketching holidays and shocked social circles when he decided to give up portraiture in favour of landscapes. In 1918 he worked as a war artist and from 1890 until c. 1925 he painted murals for Boston Library and Museum.
