Laura Knight spring meadow scented candle

Enjoy the essence of spring even on a grey day with this scented candle from our collaboration with Heal’s. With a detail from Dame Laura Knight’s Spring, 1916-20 encasing the Spring Meadow fragranced candle, notes of green leaf, citrus, jasmine and gardenia come together to bring the freshness of spring indoors.

Knight’s painting shows Lamorna Valley in Cornwall, and was painted during the First World War, when it was actually illegal to paint outside near the Cornish coast. She wrote that to paint it, she had to ‘lie on my stomach under a gorse or any other convenient bush, in dread of being taken off to prison, to make a line or two in a sketch book, memorise - rush back into my studio, and paint.’

The candle is part of our Heal’s + Tate collection of luxury scented candles, with artwork and scent pairings specially chosen to complement each other, a sensory interaction of image and fragrance. After its 40 hour burn time, the candle’s ceramic vessel is designed to be reused – perhaps as a holder for paintbrushes, pencils, or plants.

About the artist

Dame Laura Knight (1877–1970) was an English artist who worked in oils, watercolours, etching, engraving and drypoint. Knight was a painter in the figurative, realist tradition, who embraced English Impressionism. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain. In 1929 she was made a Dame, and became the second woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy in 1936. Her large retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy was the first held for a woman artist. Knight was known for painting amidst the world of the theatre and ballet in London, and for being a war artist during the Second World War. She was also greatly interested in, and inspired by, marginalised communities and individuals, including Romani people and circus performers.
