Chaïm Soutine

Exhibition poster for Tate’s 1963 exhibition of selected works of painters Amedeo Modigliani and Chaïm Soutine, which took place at Tate Gallery (now Tate Britain). Showcasing the works of both artists, it brought a popular exhibition from the Edinburgh Festival to a London audience, with the help of the Arts Council of Great Britain. The poster text reads:

Chaïm Soutine was an expressionist painter. Soutine grew up in a Lithuanian-Jewish ghetto in the Russian Empire. A talented student, he emigrated to Paris aged 20 to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. During this time, living in Montparnasse, he became friends with Amedeo Modigliani, who painted his portrait several times. Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy to Jewish parents in 1884, and was a dedicated painter, draughtsman and sculptor. He began studying art in 1898 and continued to do so after moving to southern Italy to recuperate after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. In 1906, intrigued by the Paris art scene, he moved to the city where he developed a unique and instantly recognisable pictorial style.
